How Secure Is the Jail? Convict Serving 20-Year Sentence Escapes from Nuapada Sub-Jail During Cleaning Work
Nuapada, Sept. 7: A serious question has been raised over the security arrangements at the Nuapada Sub-Jail after a convict serving a 20-year rigorous imprisonment sentence allegedly escaped from the jail premises while cleaning work was underway on Monday morning. The incident has caused a stir in Nuapada, raising questions over the level of surveillance maintained over inmates at such a sensitive and highly secured institution. The escaped convict has been identified as Biswobihari Majhi (30) of Kandulkona village under Sinapali police station limits. According to information available from jail authorities, he allegedly took advantage of the situation during cleaning work and managed to flee from the jail premises at around 8 am on Monday. The incident came to light shortly thereafter, triggering panic inside the jail premises. A high alert was reportedly sounded, while police launched searches at various locations to trace and apprehend the absconding convict. Surveillance has also been intensified along possible escape routes and in adjoining areas. According to reports, Biswobihari had been convicted in a rape case registered in 2021. In 2023, the Nuapada court sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. His escape from the jail premises has therefore raised concern among local residents, particularly given the seriousness of the offence for which he was serving his sentence. Nuapada Sub-Jail Superintendent Balaram Bisi Majhi has confirmed the incident. However, the circumstances under which a convicted prisoner managed to leave the jail premises despite the existing security arrangements have become the central issue. Questions are now being raised over the level of supervision during cleaning activities. Were adequate security personnel deployed to monitor the inmates? Were established security protocols properly followed? How did the convict manage to leave the jail premises without being noticed immediately? These and several other questions have put the jail administration’s security mechanism under scrutiny. Officials have indicated that an inquiry will be conducted to determine whether there was any negligence and to identify possible lapses in the security arrangements. The key question now is whether the matter will end with a high alert and an inquiry or whether accountability will also be fixed if any negligence by jail personnel is established. The incident has once again highlighted the importance of strict surveillance and foolproof security measures inside correctional institutions. All eyes are now on the administration’s efforts to apprehend the escaped convict and on the action taken to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
