Where Is the Safety of Workers? Uncle-Nephew Die of Snakebite : Who Will Answer?
Sinapali, Aug 22: A tragic incident at a bridge construction site in the Sinapali area has raised serious concerns over the safety and living conditions of construction workers after two labourers died of suspected venomous snakebite and another was critically injured. The deceased have been identified as Daitari Tandi and Bharat Tandi, residents of Chacharabhata village under Sinapali police limits. The two were related as uncle and nephew. Another worker, Tulasi Bagarti, sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment. According to reports, bridge construction work is underway at Goldha under Sinapali police station limits, where several labourers have been staying at a temporary camp. On Friday night, after having dinner, the workers went to sleep when a venomous snake allegedly bit three of them. After other workers noticed the incident, the victims were immediately rushed to the Nuapada District Headquarters Hospital. However, doctors declared Daitari Tandi and Bharat Tandi dead. Tulasi Bagarti, whose condition was reportedly critical, continues to receive treatment. Questions Raised Over Workers’ Safety The incident has triggered serious questions over the safety and accommodation arrangements provided to workers engaged in construction activities. Questions are being raised over whether the contractor had made adequate and safe accommodation arrangements for the labourers, particularly during the monsoon season. Were proper labour camps provided? Were beds and mosquito nets available for the workers? Were adequate precautions taken to protect them from snakes and other dangerous reptiles? These are among the questions that now demand clear answers. Kamal Charan Tandi Seeks Answers Reacting to the incident, Kamal Charan Tandi, Congress candidate from the Khariar Assembly constituency, raised questions over the safety arrangements for construction workers. He questioned whether proper accommodation, sleeping facilities and necessary safety measures had been ensured before commencement of the construction work. He stressed the need for clarity regarding the arrangements made for the workers’ safety. The deaths of the two labourers have not only plunged their families into grief but have also brought the issue of worker safety at construction sites into sharp focus. Locals have demanded a fair and impartial inquiry, fixing of responsibility, and adequate assistance for the bereaved families.
