Floodwater Released from Lower Indra Dam Tikhali as Water Level Rises
One Gate Opened to Discharge 90 Cusecs; Reservoir Water Level Stands at 263.50 Metres Nuapada, August 18: Floodwater is being released from the Tikhaly Lower Indra Irrigation Project in Khariar block of Nuapada district for the second time this season, following a rise in the reservoir’s water level amid continued rainfall. Keeping in view the possibility of another spell of low-pressure-induced rainfall on August 19, the authorities have opened one gate of the dam as a precautionary measure to regulate the reservoir level and maintain adequate storage capacity. At present, around 90 cusecs of water is being discharged through the open gate, while an estimated 150–160 cusecs of rainwater is flowing into the reservoir. The maximum water-holding level of Tikhaly Dam is 265.50 metres, while the current water level stands at approximately 263.50 metres. Officials are closely monitoring the inflow and the reservoir level to prevent excessive accumulation of water and minimise the possibility of a flood situation in downstream areas. Additional gates may be opened if required, depending on the inflow and prevailing weather conditions. The dam witnessed its first floodwater discharge of the season on July 27. As the water level increased further, five gates were opened on July 29 to release excess water. Superintending Engineer Saumya Ranjan Jaypuria said that the department is keeping a continuous watch on the water level and inflow and is taking all necessary precautionary measures to prevent any flood-like situation. The authorities have assured that the situation is being closely monitored and water will be released through additional gates whenever necessary to maintain the reservoir at a safe level.
