Allegations of Irregularities in Government Road Project: Residents Demand Probe into ₹11.05 Lakh Development Work

Fresh allegations of irregularities in a government-funded rural development project have surfaced in Nuapada district, with local residents demanding a thorough investigation into the construction of the Badibahal–Tileimal Murum and Metalling Road under Karanbahali Gram Panchayat in Sinapali Block. The project, aimed at improving rural connectivity, carries an estimated cost of ₹11,05,255, according to the information displayed on the official project board installed at the site. The board mentions details such as the name of the work, scheme, sanctioned amount, and the commencement and completion dates, in accordance with government norms intended to ensure transparency in public expenditure. However, local residents have alleged that the quality and extent of the work do not appear to match the sanctioned amount. They have questioned whether the road has been executed as per the approved estimate and whether the public funds have been utilised in accordance with the prescribed technical specifications. Residents have demanded that the concerned authorities verify the Measurement Book (MB), approved estimate, work order, bills and vouchers, along with the information displayed on the project board. They have also sought an independent assessment of the quantity of work executed, the quality of materials used, and whether the payments were made strictly on the basis of actual measurements. According to the villagers, transparency and accountability are essential in every public development project, particularly those funded through taxpayers' money. They have urged the authorities to conduct a fair and impartial technical inspection to ascertain whether the project conforms to the approved standards and financial provisions. The residents further stated that if the inquiry establishes any financial irregularity, substandard construction, or violation of government norms, appropriate legal and departmental action should be initiated against those found responsible. Government-funded infrastructure projects are expected to improve the quality of life in rural areas. Ensuring that every rupee sanctioned for public welfare is utilised effectively is crucial to maintaining public trust and achieving the intended objectives of rural development.
