Khariar, July 9:
A potentially life-threatening situation has emerged in Muktapur under Khariar Block of Nuapada district, where dangerously low-hanging electricity wires have raised serious safety concerns among local residents. The overhead power lines have sagged to such a low level that even small children could easily come into contact with them, creating the risk of a fatal accident at any moment.
The situation is particularly alarming as one of the entrance gates of Khariar Autonomous College is located adjacent to the spot. Hundreds of students, local residents, and two-wheeler riders use this road every day. Residents fear that any accidental contact with the live wires could result in a major tragedy.
According to local people, despite the hazardous condition of the electric pole and overhead wires existing for a long time, the Electricity Department has failed to take corrective measures. They alleged that repeated concerns have gone unnoticed, leaving commuters exposed to unnecessary danger.
The onset of the monsoon has further intensified the risk, as strong winds and rain can make the already sagging power lines even more dangerous. Parents and residents have expressed growing anxiety, questioning who would be held responsible if an accident or electrocution were to occur.
Demanding immediate intervention, locals have urged the Electricity Department to inspect the site without delay, raise the sagging power lines to a safe height, and carry out all necessary repair work at the earliest. They stressed that preventive action should be taken before a tragedy occurs, rather than responding only after lives are lost.
